The Curly Girl Method: What It Gets Right and Where It Gets Complicated
The Curly Girl Method changed the conversation around textured hair.
At a time when curls were routinely brushed out, chemically straightened or treated as a problem to control, the method encouraged people to work with their natural texture. It placed moisture, gentle handling and curl definition at the centre of the routine. That shift was important, and many people finally discovered that their supposedly unruly hair was simply curly hair being treated like straight hair.
Then the internet got involved.
A useful philosophy gradually became a complicated rulebook. Ingredients were sorted into approved and forbidden lists. Wash days became multi-hour events. People worried that one incorrect product would somehow reset their entire curl journey.
Curly hair deserves specialised care. It does not require religious obedience to somebody else’s routine.
What is the Curly Girl Method?
Created by hairstylist Lorraine Massey, the original method encouraged people with textured hair to avoid practices considered drying or disruptive to curls. Common principles include avoiding harsh cleansing, using conditioner or co-wash, reducing direct heat, avoiding rough towels and supporting the hair’s natural curl pattern with careful styling.
Different online communities have since created their own versions, ingredient rules and product tests. As a result, two people can say they follow the Curly Girl Method while doing quite different things.
What the method gets right
Curly hair should not be treated like straight hair
The bends and turns in curly hair make it harder for natural scalp oil to travel along the fibre. Curly lengths can therefore feel dry even when the scalp itself is not. Curl pattern also becomes easily disturbed by rough brushing, towel friction and aggressive styling.
Conditioner matters
Conditioner improves slip, makes detangling easier and helps reduce the friction that can contribute to frizz and breakage. Applying it carefully through the lengths and detangling while the hair has slip can make an enormous difference.
Less manipulation can improve definition
Repeated brushing, touching and rearranging while curls dry can pull apart their natural groupings. Gentle handling and allowing the curl pattern to set are useful principles, regardless of which method you follow.
Texture is not damage
Frizz, volume and variation are part of curly hair. The aim does not need to be making every curl identical or forcing textured hair to resemble a smooth blow-dry.
Where the method may not suit everyone
Co-washing is not the same as cleansing every scalp
Some people love cleansing with conditioner or a dedicated co-wash. Others develop flat roots, product build-up or an uncomfortable scalp when oil, sweat and styling residue are not removed effectively enough.
Your scalp is skin. Its cleansing needs are influenced by oil production, exercise, product use and scalp conditions, not only by the pattern of the hair growing from it.
Ingredient rules can become oversimplified
An ingredient does not behave identically in every formula. Its concentration, the ingredients surrounding it, the amount used and whether a product is rinsed away all affect the result. Judging the performance of a complete formula from one word on the ingredient list can create more anxiety than insight.
More moisture is not always the answer
Curly hair can be dry, but it can also be fine, oily at the scalp, overburdened with product or weakened by colour and heat. Adding increasingly heavy layers may reduce movement and definition without addressing what the hair actually needs.
The SOPHIC approach: principles, not rules
We believe curly hair needs a clean scalp, properly conditioned lengths, gentle handling and styling that supports rather than fights the curl.
The SOPHIC Curly routine is intentionally straightforward:
-
Cleanse the scalp once to loosen oil, sweat and product residue.
-
Cleanse again so the scalp and roots are properly clean.
-
Condition the lengths once with a formula designed to deposit the conditioning the hair needs before being rinsed away.
-
Style with Curl Cream according to your texture, density and desired finish.
You do not need to follow every internet rule to care for curls properly. Keep the principles that improve your hair. Adapt the ones that do not. A routine should make curly hair easier to live with, not give you another part-time job.
