What We Leave Out (And Why It Matters)
When it comes to haircare, ingredients matter just as much as results.
At Sophic, we believe conscious haircare starts not only with what we include, but with what we intentionally leave out. Not because fear sells, but because transparency and long-term wellbeing matter.
Your scalp is skin. It absorbs. It reacts. And the products you use repeatedly can play a role in your overall exposure to certain chemicals.
That’s why our formulations are built with a hormone-conscious lens, informed by science, not trends.
Why “Hormone-Conscious” Haircare?
Hormones regulate everything from mood and energy to skin, hair growth and overall balance. Some commonly used cosmetic ingredients have been identified as potential endocrine disruptors, meaning they may interfere with the body’s hormonal systems.
While research is ongoing, we believe in taking a precautionary, informed approach, especially for products used frequently and left on the scalp.
Hormone-conscious doesn’t mean fear-based.
It means thoughtful formulation, risk awareness, and choosing safer alternatives where possible.
Ingredients We Choose Not to Use
Parabens
Often used as preservatives, parabens have been linked to potential hormone disruption due to their ability to mimic oestrogen in the body.
Our approach: We use alternative preservation systems that meet safety and performance standards without relying on parabens.
Phthalates
Commonly found in synthetic fragrance blends, phthalates are used to help scents last longer but have raised concerns around hormone interference.
Our approach: We avoid phthalates and carefully select fragrance components with transparency and safety in mind.
Formaldehyde Donors
These ingredients slowly release formaldehyde to prevent microbial growth. While effective, they’re not aligned with our health-first philosophy.
Our approach: We choose preservation systems that do not rely on formaldehyde-releasing ingredients.
Harsh Sulfates
Ingredients like SLS and SLES can strip the scalp and hair, disrupting the natural barrier and leading to irritation or imbalance over time.
Our approach: We use gentler cleansing agents that respect the scalp while still delivering performance.
Unnecessary Fillers & Over-processing
Not everything synthetic is bad, and not everything natural is good. But unnecessary fillers and overprocessed ingredients add little benefit.
Our approach: Every ingredient in a Sophic formula earns its place.
What We Use Instead
Leaving things out only works if what replaces them performs.
Sophic products are built around:
-
Thoughtfully selected Australian botanicals
-
Proven, functional ingredients that support scalp and hair health
-
Balanced formulations designed to work with the body, not against it
We prioritise ingredients that support hydration, strength, scalp comfort and long-term hair health, without compromising on results.
Clean Isn’t Enough. Conscious Matters.
“Clean” has become a catch-all term with no consistent definition.
For us, conscious haircare means:
-
Understanding ingredient impact
-
Considering cumulative exposure
-
Being honest about what science does and doesn’t yet know
-
Continuously improving our formulations as research evolves
It’s not about perfection. It’s about responsibility.
What B Corp Certification Means for This Philosophy
Sophic is a certified B Corporation, which means our decisions are independently assessed against high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.
In practice, this means:
-
Ingredient and supplier scrutiny
-
Responsible sourcing and manufacturing
-
Long-term thinking over short-term gains
-
Accountability beyond marketing claims
Our ingredient standards aren’t just internal values — they’re part of how we’re measured.
Our Promise to You
We promise to:
-
Be transparent about what’s in our products
-
Be equally transparent about what we leave out
-
Formulate with care, intention and integrity
-
Continue learning, evolving and improving
Because conscious haircare should feel empowering, not confusing.
