How to Find the Right Hair Routine for Your Hair Type and Goals

Choosing haircare should not be about following trends or collecting more products. The most effective routine begins with understanding what your hair needs: its natural texture, condition, scalp balance and the result you want to achieve.

SOPHIC takes a routine-led approach to professional haircare. Formulated and manufactured in Australia, the range combines salon-grade performance with naturally derived ingredients, Australian botanicals and considered environmental standards. Rather than treating every head of hair in the same way, SOPHIC offers targeted cleansers, conditioners, treatments and styling products selected according to hair type and individual goals.

Here is how to build a routine that works for you.

Start by understanding your hair type

Your hair type describes its natural characteristics, but it is only the starting point. Two people may both have straight hair, yet one may experience oiliness and lack of volume while the other has dryness and colour damage.

Consider four key factors:

Texture: Is your hair straight, wavy, curly or coily?

Strand thickness: Are the individual strands fine, medium or coarse?

Density: Do you have a smaller or larger amount of hair overall?

Porosity: Does your hair absorb moisture quickly, or does product remain on the surface?

Fine hair usually benefits from lightweight formulas that cleanse and condition without heaviness. Curly, coily or coarse hair generally requires more moisture and products that support definition. Colour-treated or heat-styled hair may need hydration and strengthening care. Hair that becomes oily or coated quickly may require a deeper reset alongside a gentler regular cleanser.

Choose one primary hair goal

Trying to address dryness, frizz, breakage, volume, shine and scalp balance at once can lead to unnecessary product build-up. Begin with the concern that has the greatest impact on your hair.

Your priority might be maintaining balance, replenishing hydration, strengthening damage, defining curls, creating volume, removing build-up or protecting blonde and colour-treated hair. Once the foundation works consistently, introduce a secondary treatment or styling product.

For balanced, frequently washed or fine hair

Hair that is healthy, fine, easily weighed down or washed regularly needs effective cleansing without unnecessary richness.

SOPHIC Daily Cleanser is a lightweight, balanced option for frequent use, removing excess oil and build-up while maintaining the hair’s natural moisture balance. Pair it with Daily Conditioner for lightweight hydration and easier manageability.

For additional movement, apply Volume Mist before styling. Those who use heat can prepare the hair with Prepare Mist, which supports hydration, manageability and heat protection.

For dry, coarse or dehydrated hair

Dryness may appear as roughness, dullness, tangling, frizz or brittle ends. In this case, choose a moisture-focused foundation.

Begin with Moisture Cleanser and Moisture Conditioner to cleanse gently while restoring hydration. Once a week, replace your usual conditioner with Moisture Treatment. Its formula includes cupuaçu, baobab, jojoba and hemp oils, alongside Australian botanicals such as quandong and Kakadu plum.

Apply the treatment mainly through the lengths and ends, where dryness is usually most noticeable. Finish with a small amount of Smooth Cream for frizz control or Nourish Oil on the ends for added polish. Start with less product than you think you need and add more only where necessary.

For curly, coily or textured hair

Curls need moisture, consistency and definition without stiffness. A cleanser that removes too much natural oil can leave curls dry and irregular, while overly heavy products may reduce movement.

The SOPHIC Curly Routine combines Curly Cleanser, Curly Conditioner and Curl Cream. The cleanser removes build-up while supporting moisture balance. The conditioner helps smooth the cuticle and improve manageability, while Curl Cream enhances definition and reduces frizz without creating a hard or crunchy finish.

Apply conditioner in sections and distribute it through the lengths. After rinsing, apply a small amount of Curl Cream to damp hair, concentrating on the areas that need greater definition. Between wash days, a light mist of water and a very small amount of Curl Cream can help reshape curls.

For damaged, fragile or over-processed hair

Hair exposed to repeated colouring, lightening, chemical services or high heat may need strengthening support. Signs can include snapping, reduced elasticity, split ends and a weakened appearance.

Introduce SOPHIC Protein Treatment once a week or according to your hair’s condition. Protein-based care can help support weakened hair, but it should remain balanced with moisture. Alternate it with Moisture Treatment if the hair becomes rigid or less manageable.

Prepare Mist is also an important step before blow-drying or heated styling. Lowering tool temperatures, reducing unnecessary heat and handling wet hair gently will support any repair-focused routine.

For oily scalps, build-up or unresponsive hair

When hair becomes heavy, dull or difficult to style, the answer is not always more conditioner. Product residue, excess oil and environmental build-up can prevent the rest of your routine from performing effectively.

Use Revive Cleanser weekly or as needed for a deeper cleanse and scalp reset. Follow with a regular cleanser and conditioner suited to your moisture needs.

SOPHIC’s Scalp & Hair Restore Routine pairs Revive Cleanser with Moisture Cleanser and Moisture Conditioner to remove residue while restoring hydration. It is designed for hair affected by build-up, excess oil or a heavy, coated appearance.

Avoid aggressive daily clarifying. The aim is to restore balance, not strip the scalp.

For blonde, grey or colour-treated hair

Blonde, highlighted and grey hair may develop unwanted yellow or brassy tones. Violet Cleanser can be introduced as a targeted toning step rather than used automatically at every wash.

Alternate it with Daily or Moisture Cleanser according to your hair condition, then follow with conditioner. If lightening has left the hair fragile, add Protein Treatment. When dryness is the main concern, choose Moisture Treatment instead.

Keep your routine simple and consistent

A complete routine does not need ten steps. For most people, the right structure is simple:

  1. Cleanse according to your scalp and hair needs.
  2. Condition the mid-lengths and ends.
  3. Treat weekly for hydration, strength or scalp balance.
  4. Style with one targeted product.

Review the results after several washes. Haircare works best when products are used consistently and in the correct amount. SOPHIC formulas are highly concentrated, so begin sparingly and add more only when your hair requires it.

Hair can also change through weather, colouring, hormonal shifts and styling habits. A routine that worked six months ago may no longer address your current priorities.

SOPHIC’s online Hair Quiz offers personalised guidance based on your hair characteristics and goals, helping you choose a considered starting point rather than relying on guesswork.

The right hair routine is not the most complicated one. It is the one that understands your hair, supports your priorities and delivers reliable results with every wash.
