Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil

What is jojoba oil?

Jojoba oil is a golden, nutrient-rich liquid derived from the seeds of the Simmondsia chinensis plant, a hardy shrub native to North America. Though commonly referred to as an oil, it’s technically a wax ester, which gives it a unique molecular structure similar to the natural sebum produced by human skin.

This natural, multipurpose oil is found in many body lotions, face moisturisers, shampoos, and conditioners. Used on its own, it’s deeply nourishing for the skin, scalp, hair, and even nails.

How jojoba oil is made?

Jojoba oil is produced by cold-pressing the seeds of the Simmondsia chinensis plant. These seeds contain about 50–60% oil by weight. The cold-pressing method is preferred because it preserves the oil’s natural structure, nutrients, and antioxidant properties without the use of heat or solvents.

After pressing, the oil may be filtered and refined depending on the desired purity level. SOPHIC uses high-quality, minimally processed jojoba oil to ensure maximum nourishment and performance in our formulations.

Why jojoba oil is good for hair:

Jojoba is loved by dermatologists, trichologists, and cosmetic chemists alike, and for good reason. Here’s what makes it a standout ingredient:

  • Deeply Moisturising: Its wax-like structure mimics natural skin oils, providing hydration while helping to balance oil production.
  • Softens and Soothes: Ideal for dry skin and sensitive scalps, jojoba helps calm inflammation, itchiness, and tightness.
  • Natural Antioxidant: Rich in vitamin E, it helps protect against environmental stressors and supports skin regeneration.
  • Non-Comedogenic: Will jojoba clog pores? No! Jojoba is lightweight, absorbs quickly, and won’t clog pores, making it suitable for all skin types.
  • Strengthens Hair and Scalp: Prevents split ends, reduces scalp irritation, encourages hair growth by keeping follicles nourished and unblocked

Safe, pure and sustainably sourced

We use only high-grade, organic jojoba oil sourced from sustainable farms. Its environmental resilience means it thrives in arid conditions with minimal resources, making it a powerful yet eco-conscious ingredient.

Is jojoba oil safe for sensitive skin?

Yes, its chemical makeup closely resembles human sebum, making it gentle and non-irritating for even the most reactive skin.

Will jojoba cause acne?

No, it shouldn’t. Jojoba helps regulate oil production, making it suitable for oily/acne skin types. Its antibacterial properties also support clearer skin.

What’s the difference between jojoba and argan oil?

While both are rich in vitamin E, jojoba is lighter and more balancing, whereas argan oil is richer and better suited for deep nourishment. SOPHIC products blend the two for a full-spectrum approach.

What jojoba oil is good for?

Jojoba oil is a true multitasker in natural beauty care. It’s good for:

Skin:

  • Hydration without clogging pores (non-comedogenic)
  • Balancing oil production (suitable for oily or acne-prone skin)
  • Soothing inflammation and dryness
  • Protecting against environmental stress thanks to vitamin E

Hair:

  • Moisturising dry ends and frizz
  • Scalp health and itch relief
  • Prevention of split ends and breakage
  • Support for natural curl definition without buildup

Nails:

  • Conditioning cuticles
  • Strengthening brittle nails

That’s why it’s a hero ingredient in SOPHIC products like our Moisture Treatment, Curly Conditioner, Smooth Cream, and Nourish Oil (for hair and skin)

Jojoba oil when pregnant?

Yes, jojoba oil is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy. It’s hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and non-irritating, making it ideal for sensitive, hormonal, or reactive skin during this stage. In fact, many people use it to:

  • Soothe dry patches or hormonal breakouts
  • Nourish the scalp and reduce itchiness
  • Massage into the belly or body to help maintain skin elasticity

That said, always patch test any new product and consult with your healthcare provider if you have concerns or high-risk sensitivities.
